Linking Classroom Learning with Community Realities: PPHS Students’ Field Visit to Kamrangirchar

On 24 January 2026, students of the Population and Public Health Sciences (PPHS) program, enrolled in PHS 7307 (Occupational Health) and EHS 7405 (Public Health Toxicology), participated in a field visit to Kamrangirchar, Dhaka. The visit was conducted under the guidance and supervision of Rubayat Kabir, Senior Lecturer, Department of Social Relations, and Md. Ekhtekharul Islam, Adjunct Faculty, Department of Social Relations.

The primary objective of the field visit was to provide students with hands-on field experience and to deepen their understanding of community, environmental, and occupational health issues. During the visit, students closely observed the living and working conditions of laborers employed in plastic recycling plants and gained firsthand insight into the challenges they face in their daily lives.

At the recycling facilities, students identified several critical concerns, including unsafe plastic recycling practices, poor waste management systems, and inadequate sanitation facilities. The visit also highlighted the adverse health impacts of these conditions on workers, particularly due to limited access to clean water, air and noise pollution, and insufficient hygiene practices, all of which significantly affect the overall quality of life in the area.

Overall, the field visit successfully bridged theoretical classroom knowledge with real-world public health scenarios, enhancing students’ awareness of occupational health risks and environmental responsibility. The program concluded with a shared lunch among the participants, marking a smooth and satisfactory end to the visit.
