In-House Seminar on “Colorectal Cancer: A Growing Public Health Concern in Bangladesh”
On 29 January 2026, the Department of Social Relations organized a seminar titled “Colorectal Cancer: A Growing Public Health Concern in Bangladesh” at the Razia Samad Lecture Gallery (Room-242), running from 10:10 AM to 11:40 AM. The session was chaired by Dr. Touhida Tasnima (Associate Professor & Chairperson, Department of Social Relations) with Dr. Mobarak Hossain Khan (Professor, Department of Social Relations) as a special guest. Dr. Marzia Zaman Sultana (Senior Lecturer, Department of Social Relations) was the internal speaker, and Dr. Md. Khademul Bashar (Assistant Professor, Directorate General of Health Services) joined as the guest speaker.
The purpose of the seminar was to build knowledge and raise awareness among students on colorectal cancer. Dr. Marzia Zaman Sultana presented the basics of cancer and its global burden, along with the risk factors and the prevention measures. She addressed that even though leading a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk factors, genetic factors can still play an important role in increasing the chances of developing cancer.
Dr. Md. Khademul Bashar presented colorectal anatomy and the broader picture of the disease, including its epidemiology, causes, examinations, treatment options, and prognosis. He explained these topics in a way that even students without a medical background could easily understand. He pointed out that colorectal cancer ranks among the top ten cancers in Bangladesh and tends to appear at a younger age here (25-75 years), compared to the western countries. Moreover, lifestyle habits, especially diets high in red meat, fatty foods, and processed items, can harm the colon and increase the chances of developing cancer. The seminar also highlighted the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, giving students a clearer understanding of both the seriousness of the disease and the preventative steps that can reduce risk.
