Department of Social Relations Hosts Seminar on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender Justice in Collaboration with Plan International Bangladesh

The Department of Social Relations (DSR), in collaboration with Plan International Bangladesh, organized a seminar titled “Advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender Justice in Bangladesh” at the Jalaluddin Ahmed Lecture Gallery on August 21, 2025. The seminar was designed for undergraduate students of the Population and Public Health Sciences (PPHS) program, particularly those enrolled in courses of Fertility and Reproductive Behavior (PSS7301), Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (PHS304), and Gender and Environment (EHS7305).

The seminar aimed to enhance students’ understanding of gender, health, gender inequality, sexual violence, and women’s rights and justice in Bangladesh. It highlighted the urgent need to address gender inequality, harmful practices such as child marriage, and social exclusion, while also promoting bodily autonomy and access to comprehensive SRHR services.

The event was chaired by Dr. Touhida Tasnima, Associate Professor and Chairperson of DSR, who welcomed participants with her opening remarks. The program was hosted by Senior Lecturer Rubayat Kabir. Distinguished speakers from Plan International Bangladesh contributed to the session:

  1. Kabita Bose:  Country Director
  2. Syed Md. Nuruddin: Advisor-SRHR
  3. Sanjida Ahmed, Advisor-Gender, Diversity, Inclusion and Protection
  4. Sabrina Arifin Kha: Director – People and Culture

This seminar provided students with knowledge beyond classroom learning, offering them the opportunity to engage directly with professionals working in international development. They delivered an engaging and interactive session, where students actively participated, shared their perspectives and experiences on SRHR, and raised questions on challenges in the Bangladeshi context. It broadened their understanding of SRHR issues, gender justice, and the future roles of population and public health professionals in contributing to a just and inclusive society.

The program concluded with a closing address by Dr. Md. Mobarak Hossain Khan, Professor, DSR, emphasizing the importance of such collaborations in shaping the next generation of public health experts.
