From Classroom to the Factory Floor: Field Visit by PPHS Students

On 1 August 2026, students enrolled in the PHS 307: Occupational Health course of the Population and Public Health Sciences (PPHS) program at East West University participated in a field visit to Valley Design Garments and Jute Potti in Mirpur. The visit was conducted under the guidance of Rubayat Kabir, Senior Lecturer, Department of Social Relations. The visit aimed at providing students with firsthand exposure and to bridge theoretical classroom knowledge with real-world occupational health scenarios.

The visit began with a tour of the garment factory, where students conducted a structured observation of the working environment. They examined working conditions, ventilation, sanitation facilities, noise levels, and workplace safety measures. Students also observed the entire production process of export-oriented garments, from raw materials to the finished product. In addition, they interacted with workers to better understand occupational hazards and the health challenges they face.

The group then visited Jute Potti, a hub of small garment-related businesses and workshops. Here, students observed the working environment that provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by workers in small enterprises, where occupational health and safety regulations are often limited. After completing the field activities, students had lunch and a short rest before returning home.

Overall, the field visit enhanced students' understanding of occupational health, reinforcing the importance of promoting health and safety across all sectors of employment.
