EWU Department of Law Participates in CPJ Roundtable on Institutional Accountability in Bangladesh
The Department of Law, East West University, participated in a Roundtable Discussion titled “Reimagining Institutions of Accountability in Bangladesh,” organized by the Centre for Peace and Justice (CPJ) on 15 December 2025 at BRAC Centre Inn, Mohakhali, Dhaka.
The roundtable formed part of CPJ’s ongoing initiative to strengthen major accountability institutions in Bangladesh. The discussion focused on two key constitutional and statutory bodies—the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Information Commission (IC). CPJ presented its research findings on these institutions, highlighting structural challenges, governance concerns, and policy recommendations, which served as the foundation for an in-depth dialogue among academics, legal practitioners, policy experts, and representatives of civil society.
Saroar Mohammad, Israt Jahan Sadia, Md. Muktasin Fuad, Syeda Nabila Haque, and Sidhratul Muntaha Ishmy, five students from the Department of Law, East West University, actively engaged in the discussion, offering thoughtful insights on issues such as institutional independence, transparency, and the practical enforcement of accountability mechanisms. Ms. Nabila Farhin, Senior Lecturer, Department of Law, represented academia at the roundtable. The exchange of perspectives contributed to a deeper understanding of how accountability institutions may be reimagined to function more effectively within Bangladesh’s legal and constitutional framework.
The discussion was further enriched by expert remarks from Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB); Barrister Mustafizur Rahman Khan, Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh; and Ms. Ruhi Naz of Research Initiatives, Bangladesh (RIB). The event concluded with closing remarks by Dr. David Dowland, Registrar, BRAC University.
