Department of Law, EWU Collaborates with UNODC through Workshop on Education for Justice
On 15 April 2026, the Department of Law at East West University (EWU), in close collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), organized a workshop titled “Education for Justice: Trafficking in Persons (TIP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SOM)” at the EWU campus. The programme was conducted under UNODC’s global Education for Justice (E4J) initiative and aimed at promoting rule of law education and youth engagement on critical justice issues.
The programme was inaugurated by Professor Dr. Mohammad Ashik Mosaddik, Pro-Vice Chancellor of EWU. Dr. Nabaat Tasnima Mahbub, Chairperson and Associate Professor of the Department of Law, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the role of academic institutions in addressing transnational crimes through education, awareness, and critical engagement.
The workshop featured two expert-led sessions by UNODC South Asia representatives. Marcus Vinicius Paes, Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer, provided a comprehensive overview of the legal frameworks governing trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. The session included a detailed discussion on the distinction between trafficking in persons and migrant smuggling, supported by practical examples and interactive discussions, enabling participants to grasp the conceptual and operational differences more effectively. Tasneem Binta Karim, National Programme Coordinator, UNODC South Asia, followed with an engaging session focusing on emerging regional trends, risk factors, and the increasing vulnerability of youth, further encouraging student participation through discussion and reflection.
The event brought together around 100 students, alongside faculty members and departmental staff, fostering a highly interactive and participatory learning environment. Participants actively engaged in group discussions and scenario-based exercises, which enhanced their analytical skills and encouraged youth-led responses to the challenges of trafficking and migrant smuggling.
The programme concluded with a certificate and souvenir distribution ceremony and a photo session, graced by the Chairperson, resource persons, and other faculty members. The event was made possible through the generous support of UNODC South Asia, whose expert contributions significantly enriched the learning experience.
The program concluded with closing remarks delivered by Ms. Nadia Rahaman, Senior Lecturer, Department of Law, commending the efforts of the organizers and participants. The Department acknowledges Dr. Nabaat Tasnima Mahbub and Ms. Nadia Rahaman under whose effective coordination and supervision the workshop was successfully organized. Appreciation is also extended to all the other faculty members for their presence at the event, as well as to the dedicated team of volunteers for their tireless efforts.
The workshop marked another significant milestone in EWU’s ongoing commitment to strengthening justice education, fostering global collaboration, and equipping students with the knowledge and awareness necessary to address pressing transnational legal challenges.
