Department of Law, East West University Hosts Seminar on Recent Amendments to the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908

The Department of Law, East West University, organized an enriching seminar titled “The Recent Amendment to the Code of Civil Procedure (CPC), 1908.” The event brought together esteemed guests, respected faculty members, and students to explore the major reforms introduced through the amendment and to discuss their implications for Bangladesh’s civil justice system.

The seminar commenced with a welcome address delivered by Ali Mashraf, Lecturer, Department of Law, East West University. He emphasized the significance of understanding procedural reforms for future legal practitioners and noted that the amendment reflects a broader effort to modernize civil proceedings and enhance the efficiency of the justice system.

Ashfaqur Rahman, Senior Assistant Secretary, Law & Justice Division, Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, delivered an insightful presentation on the judiciary’s perspective regarding the recent amendments. He discussed several important areas of reform, including electronic service of summons, increased reliance on affidavit evidence, and changes in decree execution processes. His remarks highlighted the government’s intention to strengthen judicial mechanisms, minimize delays, and support a more efficient and transparent civil justice system.

The seminar also featured valuable insights from Jubaer Ahmed, Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh. He explained how practicing advocates perceive the amendments, outlining both the opportunities they bring and the challenges that may arise during implementation. He emphasized the importance of administrative preparedness, technological adaptation, and ongoing training to ensure effective enforcement of the new provisions.

A lively Q&A session followed, during which students actively engaged with the speakers. Their questions reflected strong interest in the practical impact of the reforms and encouraged meaningful dialogue on the evolving landscape of civil procedure in Bangladesh.

The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by honourable Chairperson, Dr. Nabaat Tasnima Mahbub, Associate Professor, Department of Law, East West University. She expressed her appreciation to the honorable guests, respected faculty members, and students for contributing to the success of the seminar.
