First Alumni Iftar and Meet-up at the Department of English, EWU
27 February 2026 marked a historic milestone for the Department of English at East West University as it hosted the First Alumni Iftar and Meet-up, keeping the belief in mind that this meeting will result in the formation of EWU English Alumni Association which is expected to have three long-term benefits, these being: the alumni members will find a sense of belonging with their Red Fort where they spent the most significant formative years of their life, the current students will find it easier not only to remain connected with their seniors working in different sectors both at home and in abroad but also to get professional mentorship vis-à-vis career guidance and job placements, and, last but never the least, the Department may think of an academic evolution, leveraging alumni feedback to identify and bridge the gap between classroom theory and the evolving skills required in the current as well as upcoming global workplaces.
The event, held at the EWU Teachers’ Canteen, was all about nostalgia and a collective commitment to community building. The event’s success was bolstered by the dedicated support of alumni members, with special thanks to Farina Haque and Sharaban Tohura. Among those who were present were more than 100 members, including Professor Dr. Fakrul Alam, Honourable Advisor to the Department of English, Dr. Akhter Jahan, the Chairperson of the Department, and Professor Dr. Muhammed Shahriar Haque, Coordinator, EWU ENG Alumni Working Committee.
The first meeting with the alumni was a great success. While the vision for this association was first introduced by Professor Dr. Muhammed Shahriar Haque in 2012, it reached fruition this year under the leadership of Chairperson Dr. Akhter Jahan, who gave the responsibility to Professor Dr. Shahriar to lead the committee consisting of two more faculty members, Assistant Professor Dr. Ariful Islam and Senior Lecturer Ms. Kaniz Fatema.
The initiative is already seeing rapid growth and digital engagement. The WhatsApp group called the EWU English Alumni Association was formed two weeks ago; it already has 412 members, which is increasing daily. A 7-member Working Committee has been established, with recommendations currently underway to form a Working Core Committee for executive operations. Besides, the department has launched the “EWU English Department Alumni Network Database Enrolment” to create a comprehensive registry ensuring streamlined communication and future collaboration.
