A team from the Department of Law at East West University secured the fourth position among 32 teams in the Bangladesh Qualifying Round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition. The team also received the third-best memorial award. The national round was organized by the International Law Students Association (ILSA) in collaboration with the US Department of Justice, Hearth Bangladesh, and held at the American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) from 1-3 February 2024. The Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world’s largest moot court and has been held since 1960 and in Bangladesh since 2017. This year, the case concerns the Sterren forty, who were declared stateless, so that they can fulfil the commitment of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to achieving the goals of its #IBelong Global Action Plan to End Statelessness by the end of 2024.

The chief guest at the inaugural ceremony was Mr. Salman F. Rahman, the esteemed advisor to Bangladesh's prime minister. Mr. Peter D. Haas, the US ambassador to Bangladesh, was present as the special guest. This year, a total of 32 teams participated in the competition, representing different public and private universities in the country. It is the largest national round of the Bangladesh Qualifying Round of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition till now. The competition had four segments, i.e., preliminary, quarter-final, semi-final, and final. The eight highest-ranked teams qualified for the knock-out quarter-finals round, and the best four teams qualified for the semi-finals.

The EWU team was comprised of oralists Ms. Radia Nowshin and Ms. Saima Haque and researcher Ms. Pospita Akter. Mr. Mahmudul Hassan and Ms. Afrin Sultana Anika were also participants in the international round. Ms. Nabila Farhin, a senior lecturer at the EWU law department, was the team coach. The team secured two awards, 4th best team and 3rd best memorial, and received the crests from Honourable Justice Naima Haider, Justice of the High Court Division of Bangladesh. It's a very proud moment for the team, the coach, the department of law and the university.

It is noteworthy that each year, the top four teams qualify to participate in the International Rounds, held in Washington, DC, the United States of America. The EWU team is qualified to participate in the international round in Washington, DC.
