Training of Trainers Program on Media and Information Literacy Launched to Strengthen Democratic Engagement and Responsible Digital Citizenship
The Department of Information Studies (DIS), East West University organized a two-day Training of Trainers (ToT) Program on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) on 30–31 January 2026 at the BIAM Foundation, Dhaka. The program was implemented in collaboration with MILNetBD and UNESCO, with support from the United Nations, as part of a six-month national initiative aimed at strengthening Media and Information Literacy in Bangladesh.
The ToT program brought together 29 participants, comprising faculty members from leading public and private universities across the country. The training was facilitated by four nationally and internationally recognized experts: Dr. Dilara Begum, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Information Studies, East West University, and President of MILNetBD; Mr. Goutam Mondal, Journalist and Researcher, Daily Samakal; Dr. Md. Roknuzzaman, Professor and Chairperson, Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka; and Mr. Nadim Farhad, Peace and Development Officer, Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator.
The second day of the workshop was graced by Dr. Susan Vize, UNESCO Country Representative, as Chief Guest, and Professor Dr. Mohammad Ashik Mosaddik, Pro-Vice Chancellor, East West University, as Special Guest. Their participation underscored the strong institutional and international commitment to advancing Media and Information Literacy and responsible digital citizenship in Bangladesh.
The training modules were based on the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Curriculum and were carefully contextualized for the national setting. Key thematic areas included critical information evaluation, verification techniques, privacy and data protection, responsible use of social media, misinformation and hate speech, intellectual property rights, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and ethical digital citizenship.
Participants represented a diverse range of higher education institutions from across Bangladesh, including BRAC University, Daffodil International University, East West University (EWU), Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), Jahangirnagar University, Khulna University (KU), Khwaja Yunus Ali University, National University, Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), North South University (NSU), Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), The University of Chittagong (CU), The University of Dhaka, The University of Rajshahi (RU) and Varendra University, Rajshahi.
The program concluded with a closing session and certificate distribution, reaffirming the commitment of DIS, East West University, MILNetBD, UNESCO, and the United Nations to strengthen democratic values, promoting social cohesion, and supporting peaceful, informed, and inclusive electoral participation through Media and Information Literacy.
