Public Lecture by Kamla Bhasin
The Department of Sociology organized a public lecture by Kamla Bhasin, a prominent feminist activist, social scientist, poet and author on 29 September 2019 at Nousher Ali Gallery of East West University.
The program started with a welcoming speech by the Chairperson of the Department of Sociology, Dr. Mumita Tanjeela. She introduced Kamla Bhasin and her work to the spectators. After that, Fouzia Khandakar Eva, from SANGAT, Bangladesh shortly addressed their organizational activities to the students.
Kamla Bhasin started her speech with the true meaning of education and what should be the actual role of the educational institutions. Then, she talked about the construction of gender and the relevance of feminism in South Asian countries. Furthermore, she explained how patriarchy and capitalism objectifies the female body as well as creates numerous false needs resulting in detrimental consequences towards women and men. Moreover, she conveyed the message that, patriarchy destroys the beauty of humanity of men and generates gender discrimination in the society. She added, despite proving an equal treatment to become feminist for both men and women, men were not claimed as only the agent of patriarchy but the women as well.
Dr. Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury, Member, Board of Trustee graced the occasion with his presence and he handed over a Crest to the speaker as a token of appreciation.
The program was concluded with question-answer session, where participants asked questions to Kamla Bhasin and she appreciated all the questions with her scholarly knowledge and wonderful eloquence. Dr. Fouzia Mannan, Dean, Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, EWU, all the faculty members of Sociology Department and from other departments and invited guests attended the program as well.
