Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week 2017 celebrated at East West University

East West University Information Club (EWUIC) and the Department of Information Studies and Library Management has successfully accomplished the inauguration ceremony and rally for celebrating the Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week on 31st October, 2017 at East West University. Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson, Board of Trustees, Vice Chancellor, Pro Vice Chancellor and some respective Chairpersons, Departmental Heads and hundreds of students, teachers and staff members of the University have joined at the rally. Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson, Board of Trustees initiated the inauguration of GMIL week -2017 by flying balloons from the university ground at 11:45 am.

Pro Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Fakrul Alam in his speech, has appreciated the step taken to conduct such an event which has a global effect. In his speech, he also emphasized on the importance of Media and Information Literacy for active citizenship. He particularly mentioned that such literacies are not limited to any specific field of study rather these are skills that all must possess to sustain in this digital era. Dr. Dilara Begum, Associate Professor and Chairperson of Information Studies and Library Management also shaded light on Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week and highlighted that UNESCO has given their appreciation for hosting this program at East West University. Dr. Begum also requested to participate in the whole GMIL week to make the series of program a great success.

The yearly Global MIL Week, initiated in 2012, is led by UNESCO in cooperation with GAPMIL, UNAOC and the Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) University Network. It unites diverse actors committed to promoting media and information literacy (MIL) as a way to foster social inclusion and intercultural dialogue. Global Media and Information Literacy is the empowerment of people through Media and Information Literacy (MIL)

East West University Information Club and the Department of Information Studies and Library Management celebrated this day from 31 October 2017 to 04 November 2017 with a series of program including Extempore Speech Competition, Awareness Building Campaign and International Seminar. It is mentionable here that this celebration is the first initiative for university of Bangladesh and East West University is the forerunner to celebrate this week.
