Field Trip in Bogura for Strengthening Sociological Insight

Two days-long field visit was organized for the students of the courses of Rural Sociology (SOC 205), Qualitative Research Methodology (SOC 301), and Contemporary Sociological Theories (SOC 407) at Bamunia and Fakirpara in Bogura, on March 29 and 30, 2019. The main purpose of this field visit was to introduce students with empirical data collection strategies about social phenomenon and promote applied Sociology based on practical experiences. Approximately sixty eight students attended in the field visit.

As per the assistance of the Rural Development Academy (RDA) officials, students visited two

laboratory villages of the RDA’s research project, including Bamunia and Fakirpara, where students conducted several in-depth interviews, case studies, focus group discussions (FGDs), and participant observation to collect data on pre-selected topic of those consecutive courses. Moreover, they also learned the application of research tools, and the definite ways of conducting in-depth interview, case study, participant observation and focus group discussion. Consequently, students got the opportunity to achieve practical knowledge about rural work and livelihood, rural social structure, rural power structure, rural institutions, social changes in rural society, and rural development programs. Thus, achieved knowledge from this field visit will shed light on fine-tuning student’s thinking about social realities, which will create a substantial impact to encradle their future dreamy career. Students of Rural Sociology (SOC 205) and Contemporary Sociological Theories (SOC 407) were assigned to prepare term papers. Further, students of Qualitative Research Methodology (SOC 301) were instructed to write research reports.

The field visit was facilitated by Dr. Fouzia Mannan, Dean of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and course teachers Dr. Mumita Tanjeela, Chairperson of the Department of Sociology and Dr.

A. I. Mahbub Uddin Ahmed. For this study visit, students and faculty members departed the campus around 3.00 PM on 28 March, and stayed two nights at RDA hostel as well as visited well known archeological heritage Mahasthangrah. At last, they returned to the campus at around 9.00 PM on 30 March.
