East West University Observed Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 2019
The Department of Social Relations, East West University observed ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 2019’, through organizing a poster presentation session in the department on October 31, 2019. The students of the course ‘POP201: Health Challenges of Adolescents and Youths’ presented their posters on different topics highlighting issues related to breast cancer awareness under the guidance of the course instructor Dr. Marzia Zaman Sultana, Senior Lecturer, Department of Social Relations.
Professor Dr. Md. Mobarak Hossain Khan, Chairperson, Department of Social Relations along with other faculty members visited the posters and talked with the students regarding; causes and risk factors of breast cancer, world and Bangladesh epidemiology, self examination and screening test for early detection of breast cancer, investigation and treatment options, complications and social consequences faced by the breast cancer patients, male breast cancer risks and ways for prevention of breast cancer.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease. There are about 1.38 million new cases and 458 000 deaths from breast cancer each year (IARC Globocan, 2008). Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries the incidence has been rising up steadily in the last years due to increase in life expectancy, increase urbanization and adoption of western lifestyles.
