Department of Social Relations Organizes a Research Seminar

Department of Social Relations of East West University (EWU) organized a Seminar on “Experience and knowledge of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) among PCOS-diagnosed Bangladeshi women” on December 6, 2018, 10.10 am at S. M. Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery, EWU Campus. Speaker, Ruhun Wasata, Lecturer, Department of Social Relations presented her paper on the title mentioned above which she worked in collaboration with faculties of Ohio University.

The researcher discussed on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and the level of knowledge of PCOS among PCOS-diagnosed Bangladeshi women. She started with a brief discussion on the issue of PCOS, what are the symptoms and results of it. PCOS is the most common hormonal disorder experienced by women of reproductive age around the world. She continued her discussion on the demographic composition of the 25 respondents of the research. Findings from her research showed that the women with PCOS have a limited knowledge on PCOS, the diagnosis experience of PCOS was overall dissatisfactory. The dissatisfaction of diagnosis process increased with the uncertainty related to other health aspects related to PCOS for these respondents. Particularly, the issue of infertility and its relationship with PCOS increases the level of uncertainty among the PCOS respondents. Respondents also reported perceiving culture as a critical factor behind determining the limited knowledge of PCOS among the Bangladeshi population. Discussant Dr. Marzia Zaman Sultana explained clinical aspects of PCOS in her discussion and thanked the speaker for initiating such an interesting and important research topic. Anther discussant, Dr. Mohammad Bellal Hossain also emphasized on this point. However, he reflected on different ways how this methodological section of the research can be made stronger. He strongly recommended to continue to have only a qualitative study with the 25 respondents.

Chief Guest, Dr. Rafiqul Huda Chaudhury thanked the speaker for initiating her work on PCOS. He mentioned the importance of triangulation of different data set for the research which will produce far more impactful results of the research. Dr. Chaudhury furthermore suggested that the university will welcome a strong proposal on PCOS hence this is a critical and timely women’s health topic.

The chair of the program, Professor Dr. Md. Mobarak Hossain Khan raised the importance of conducting more researches on PCOS from a public health perspective, inclusion of media in raising awareness on PCOS. He concluded the session by saying that PCOS is not only an issue for women’s health, rather it is an issue of high importance to families, communities, and societies. A large number of students participated in the seminar.
