Two students from the Department of Law, East West University, Tashdidul Alam and Muhammad Muhtasheem Jeeon participated in a full-day Student Workshop on “Regulatory Approaches to Non-Communicable Disease (NCD) Prevention and Control” held on 22 August 2026 at BRAC University, Dhaka. Organized jointly by the BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), the workshop brought together students from Law, Public Health and Medical disciplines to explore how legal and regulatory mechanisms can contribute to the prevention and control of NCDs.

The workshop featured engaging sessions on the relevance of legal and regulatory approaches to NCD prevention, the WHO 5×5 approach, curriculum development, assessment and student feedback. Students also participated in interdisciplinary group activities, discussions and poster presentations. As part of the group activities, two Law students and three Public Health students worked together to prepare and present a poster addressing NCD-related issues, including curriculum review. The Law students contributed their perspectives on how legal and regulatory dimensions of NCD prevention and control could be more effectively incorporated into academic curricula.

The sessions were facilitated by distinguished academics and professionals, including Prof. Malay Kanti Mridha, Professor of Public Health and Director of the Central Research and Innovation Office, BRAC University; Dr. Bijoy Kumer Paul, Associate Professor of Medical Education, Bangladesh Medical University; Md. Mostafa Hosain, Assistant Professor and Academic Coordinator, School of Law, BRAC University; and Meghna Chakravartty, Research Associate, Centre for Non-Communicable Diseases (CNCD), BRAC James P Grant School of Public Health.

The workshop provided a valuable interdisciplinary learning experience and highlighted the importance of collaboration between legal and public health professionals in developing evidence-based and sustainable strategies for protecting public health. The active participation of the students from Department of Law, East West University in the curriculum review, group discussions and poster presentations reflects the important role of legal education and regulatory expertise in addressing the growing challenge of non-communicable diseases.
