Ali Mashraf completed his Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honors) and Master of Laws (LLM with specialization in International Law and thesis on Alternative Dispute Resolution) from the Department of Law, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He teaches Muslim family Law, Law of Civil Procedure, Civil Drafting, and Civil Trial and Advocacy to undergraduate-level students at East West University. He co-coordinates the law clinic program and is a member of the Research and Syllabus Committees of the Department of Law, East West University.
Before joining the academia, he served as the Program Officer in South Asia and Junior Legal Analyst in Bangladesh of iProbono, a global organization with the mission to enable people to access their rights in pursuit of a just society. He assisted in streamlining iProbono's access to justice program across South Asia, oversaw iProbono's transactional projects, and helped expand its network in Bangladesh. Ali planned, designed, and implemented three national-level projects for iProbono in Bangladesh. He worked to implement the Advocacy and Skills Training Workshops for Women Lawyers and Law Students in Dhaka and Chattogram of Bangladesh in collaboration with Rule of Law Expertise UK (ROLE UK) and Women Internationally Gaining Skills (WIGs), assisted in vetting and finalizing the training manual and capacity building of legal practitioners on anti-human trafficking laws under the Ashshash Project: Legal Support for Men and Women Who Have Escaped Trafficking in collaboration with Winrock International, Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association (BNWLA), USAID Asia Counter Trafficking in Persons (USAID Asia CTIP) and The Remedy Project, and designed and conducted training of trainers (ToT) sessions and implemented the Know Your Rights: Street Law Programme on Child and Labour Rights and Tort Law Remedies for Medical Negligence in Bangladesh, directly and indirectly benefitting over 500 stakeholders within and outside Bangladesh.
Ali takes a keen interest in human rights, constitutional law, environmental law, criminal law, law reform, alternative dispute resolution, sports law, etc. He has published numerous articles and book chapters in national and international peer-reviewed journals and edited books on human rights, access to justice, environmental law, criminal law, and constitutional law. He also writes extensively on constitutional issues (constitutional rights, remedies available for violation of constitutional rights, judicial activism, etc.) for renowned national dailies and law blogs.
Ali has represented Bangladesh in various international youth and legal forums, symposiums, workshops, and competitions, such as The Asia Pacific Youth Exchange at the Asian Development Bank Headquarters in the Philippines, The Price Media Law Moot Court Competition at the University of Oxford in the UK, The One Belt One Road Forum in Hong Kong and China, The Justice P.N. Bhagwati International Moot Court Competition on Human Rights at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune in India, The Asia Pro Bono Conferences. He has also completed a professional certification course on sports law from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore.
At law school, Ali served as a Senior Editor of Dhaka Law Review, a journal of legal scholarship edited and managed independently by law students of the University of Dhaka. He has won multiple championships, best memorial awards, and best mooter awards in national and international moot court competitions representing the Dhaka University Moot Court Society. Ali has over 14 years of experience writing for prominent newspapers and blogs on sports and contemporary and thought-provoking legal issues. He also has more than 11 years of experience volunteering for social causes. Moreover, he is involved in a diverse range of ECAs: facilitating mooting and public speaking sessions in different law schools of Bangladesh, promoting English debate across Bangladesh as the former Vice-Chair of Bangladesh Debating Council, adjudicating in various high school and university level competitions, etc.
