East West University Hosts Workshop on Media and Information Literacy
The Department of Information Studies at East West University organized a day-long workshop on Media and Information Literacy (MIL), bringing together 40 students from different departments to build awareness and practical skills for navigating today’s digital information environment. The workshop was held under the Youth-Focused Media and Information Literacy (MIL) for an Informed Bangladesh initiative, part of the UN-led BALLOT Project. This workshop was organized in collaboration with MILNetBD and UNESCO Dhaka. Dr. Dilara Begum, Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Information Studies and President of MILNetBD, attended the program as the Chief Guest.
The workshop was conducted by four faculty members from the department, namely Md. Hasinul Elahi, Senior Lecturer; Abdur Rahaman Sumon, Senior Lecturer; Rumana Rahman, Senior Lecturer; and Ashik Rayhan, Lecturer, who guided participants through a range of important topics. Throughout the day, students explored many important areas. Such as understanding media and information, privacy and data protection, responsible social media use in an AI-driven world, and the role of MIL in achieving the SDGs. The workshop also focused on identifying and tackling misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech, along with discussions on advertising, research processes, intellectual property, and the opportunities and challenges of the internet.
The workshop was highly interactive, combining discussions, practical activities, and real-life examples. This approach helped participants strengthen their critical thinking skills and better understand how to evaluate information in a fast-changing digital landscape. The workshop also emphasized the importance of responsible digital behavior and informed civic participation, encouraging students to become more aware and ethical users of information.
The programme concluded with an introduction to the Social Action Plan, inspiring participants to apply what they learned in real-life contexts and contribute positively to their communities. Through such initiatives, the organizers aim to nurture a generation of informed, responsible, and resilient digital citizens in Bangladesh.
