Department of Information Studies and UNESCO jointly commemorating Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024
The inaugural ceremony of the Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week 2024 was held on 31 October 2024 at East West University preceded by a colorful rally. Department of Information Studies, East West University and the UNESCO Dhaka Office are jointly organizing and celebrating this year’s Global MIL Week.
Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Honorable Chief Advisor and Founder Vice Chancellor and Founder President, Board of Directors, East West University, Professor Shams Rahman, Honorable Vice Chancellor, East West University, Dr. Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, and Professor Dr. Dilara Begum, and Chairperson, Department of Information Studies graced the occasion with their presence. The dignitaries emphasized the importance of media and information literacy in navigating the rapidly evolving landscape of information creation, dissemination, and consumption.
Professor Shams Rahman, Honorable Vice Chancellor, focused on empowering people, raising awareness particularly youth to make them capable to be responsible digital citizens. With an emphasis on this year's topic, “The new digital frontiers of information: Media and Information Literacy for public-interest information" Dr. Susan Vize highlighted how the youth can play a crucial role to combat the growing threat of misinformation and fake news. She also congratulated the Department of Information Studies for arranging this very important global week every year uninterruptedly since 2017.
Professor Dr. Dilara Begum, the convener of Global Media and Information literacy Week 2024, in her speech thanked the university authority and UNESCO Dhaka Office for their immense support in organizing this event. Among others Ms. Noore Jannat Proma, Communication and Information Officer, UNESCO; Department of Information Studies, faculty members; students; information professionals; government officials and media personnel were present at that event.
Focusing on digital contents in this year's edition of Global Media and Information Literacy Week 2024 will help to build a strong Media and Information Literacy network is essential for fostering an informed, responsible, and engaged society.
