Sociological Seminar Series: Examining the Psychological Impact of Mass Casualty Incidents on Healthcare Professionals

The Department of Sociology successfully arranged the 2nd seminar of the Fall Semester 2024 on 28th November at the S.M. Nousher Ali Lecture Gallery. The seminar featured a research presentation by Mr. Helal Uddin, Senior Lecturer of the Department, on his study titled Effect of Mass Casualty Incidents on Anxiety, Depression, & PTSD among Doctors and Nurses: A Systematic Review.

Mr. Helal’s research found that healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses, are significantly susceptible to psychological conditions such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression following mass casualty incidents (MCIs). His findings further reported that nurses are at greater risk compared to doctors. Additionally, the study identified several critical risk factors, both personal and organizational, that are significantly associated with these mental health conditions. As MCIs are unavoidable, the study recommended the importance of understanding these psychological impacts to develop effective mitigation strategies and minimize risks for emergency doctors and nurses.

The seminar was graced by the presence of Dr. Rafael Castro Delgado, Associate Professor of Medicine Department, University of Oviedo, Asturias, Spain, as the special guest. He also served as the supervisor for this research project. Faculty members of the Sociology Department, along with students and teachers from both East West University and some other universities, attended the seminar.

The session was moderated by Ms. Manzuma Ahsan, Senior Lecturer of the department. Following an engaging question-and-answer session, the Chairperson of the Sociology Department, Dr. Fouzia Mannan, delivered the closing remarks and expressed her gratitude to the organizing team, seminar speaker, and distinguished guests. She also highlighted the department’s commitment to promoting meaningful academic discourse through arranging such knowledge-sharing sessions.
