FACULTY PUBLICATION | Prevalence and Associated Factors of Loneliness among in-school adolescents in three South Asian Countries | Helal Uddin
We are proud to share that Helal Uddin, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at East West University, has recently published a significant research article titled “Prevalence and Associated Factors of Loneliness among in-school adolescents in three South Asian Countries." The paper has been published in the Journal of Child & Adolescent Mental Health, Scopus Indexed & Q1 Taylor & Francis Journal.
Using data from the Global School-Based Health Survey of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan (8,089 in-school adolescents), the study identified a higher prevalence of loneliness among in-school adolescents in these three South Asian countries. The study also identified several significant risk factors associated with adolescent loneliness, including lack of close friends, sleep disturbances due to anxiety, bullying, physical attacks, involvement in physical fights, parental emotional neglect, exposure to second-hand smoke, and current tobacco use.
By documenting these risk factors, the study provided a solid foundation for the development of intervention measures. These measures, which could involve social support programs, promotion of peer and parental support, enhancement of social skills, and the establishment of counselling support units in schools, are crucial in addressing adolescent loneliness. Additionally, the findings align with the goals of target 3.4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to promoting mental health and well-being.
