Exploring mental health challenges and coping strategies in university students during the COVID-19 pandemic: A case study in Dhaka city, Bangladesh | Recent Study by Mr. Masum Billah & Dr. Mumita Tanjeela

Our faculty member Mr. Masum Billah, Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology, & Dr. Mumita Tanjeela, Associate Professor of the Department of Sociology, East West University in a recent study investigated how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the mental health of university students in Dhaka. Published in Frontiers in Public Health, the research led by Masum Billah examined challenges and coping mechanisms during the initial lockdowns.

Financial constraints, academic pressure, and relationship issues were found to impact students' mental health unevenly across public and private universities. Effects ranged from anxiety and stress to severe outcomes like self-harm.

The study highlighted family bonding and social networking as effective coping strategies. Partial financial subsidies, electronic resource loans, faculty counseling, and health sessions also played a role in reducing mental health impacts.

The researchers emphasized the urgent need to prioritize mental well-being in Bangladesh. They called for stronger social support and improved financial aid, urging the establishment of mental health support centers at universities.

By acknowledging these findings and implementing targeted measures, universities can better assist students in navigating the mental health challenges posed by crises like the pandemic.
