ASA Conference Presentation | The Association Between Cumulative Social Risk and Adolescent Obesity Varies by Race-ethnicity | by Mr. Helal Uddin

Our colleague Mr. Helal Uddin, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Sociology, presented his two collaborative research papers on "Associations of Adverse Childhood Experience with Child Flourishing and School Engagement: The Modifying Role of Family Resilience and Children's Age" and "The Association Between Cumulative Social Risk and Adolescent Obesity Varies by Race-ethnicity" at American Sociological Association (ASA) Virtual Annual Meeting 2021 (August 6-10).

Their first paper explored that family resilience and connection index (FRCI) significantly moderates the association of ACEs with child flourishing, and the moderating role of FRCI varies by children's age group. Most importantly, FRCI is protective against higher numbers of ACEs among older children than younger children. Another paper has shown the differential effect of cumulative psychosocial risk exposure across racial-ethnic groups. Specifically, the harmful impact of CSR is relatively stronger among White than Black children.
