Study Visit to Latif Bawany Jute Mills Ltd, Demra, Dhaka

On May 10, 2025, a study visit was conducted at Latif Bawany Jute Mills Ltd., located in Demra, Dhaka, for students enrolled in SOC 209 (Industrial Sociology) as part of the BSS in Sociology program. The primary aim of the visit was to foster reflective learning by bridging theoretical knowledge with practical industrial experience.

Established in 1954 by Mr. Latif Bawany, a prominent industrialist of the then Pakistan, Latif Bawany Jute Mills Ltd. is one of the largest jute manufacturing plants in Bangladesh. Following the country’s independence, the mill was nationalized by the Government of Bangladesh.

Upon arrival, the students were warmly welcomed by the mill administration. A comprehensive briefing session was conducted by Mr. Mohammad Mohiuddin Sadek, General Manager (Chief Executive) of the mill and Ms. Sima Das, Deputy General Manager (Administration). During this session, students actively engaged by asking thoughtful questions related to their academic learning. Their inquiries focused on the practical application of sociological theories within an industrial setting.

Key issues discussed included the historical evolution of the mill, industrial relationsmanagement structuresoperational practicestrade unionismcollective bargaining, industry-academia interface, and social safety measures. Students also raised questions regarding relevant government policies and their impact on mill operations.

Following the discussion, students were taken on a guided tour of the shop floor, where they observed production processes, supply chain mechanisms, and overall working conditions. They also visited the surrounding community area to examine the interaction between the mill and its neighboring population, with particular attention to the mill’s role in community development.

Although the mill is currently not operational, students expressed hope that government policies would soon support its revival, recognizing its potential for substantial social and economic impact.

As part of the visit, students also explored a government-backed project named ‘Sonali Bag’ within the factory premises focused on producing eco-friendly bags from jute waste. The mill authorities explained that the successful implementation of this initiative could offer a sustainable alternative to polythene, contributing positively to environmental conservation.

The visit was supervised and guided by the course instructor, Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology. On behalf of East West University and the Department of Sociology, Dr. Khan extended heartfelt thanks to the mill authorities for facilitating the visit. He expressed confidence that such academic-industry collaborations would leave a lasting impact on students and contribute meaningfully to future industry-academic partnerships.
