Study Reveals Multi-layered Factors Contributing to Men's Suicide in Bangladesh | Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan

A new study published in OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying explores the multifaceted reasons behind male suicide in Bangladesh through Bronfenbrenner’s socio-ecological theory. Conducted by Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan, Associate Professor, and S. M. Anowarul Kayes Shimul, Senior Lecturer from East West University, the research examines fifteen male suicide cases from Jhenaidah, an area with high suicide rates.

Using in-depth interviews with significant others of the deceased, the study identifies four primary themes influencing suicide: individual/micro-level factors (e.g., mental health, substance abuse), interpersonal/meso-level factors (e.g., relationship conflicts, family dynamics), community/exo-level factors (e.g., local norms, economic conditions), and societal/macro-level factors (e.g., cultural attitudes, national policies). Additionally, ten sub-themes offer further insights into specific triggers.

The researchers advocate for a multi-sectoral approach to suicide prevention, involving mental health services, community support, and policy reforms to address the issue comprehensively.
