Prothom Alo–Badabon Sangho Roundtable on Climate Change and Gender Equality | Dr. Mumita Tanjeela
Dr. Mumita Tanjeela, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at East West University, participated in a roundtable titled “Climate Change, Gender Equality: Empowerment of Women and Adolescent Girls,” organized by Prothom Alo and Badabon Sangho on 15 September 2026.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Tanjeela emphasized that women should not be viewed only as victims of climate change but also as active agents with valuable knowledge, skills, and capacities. She highlighted the importance of recognizing women’s local knowledge and everyday experiences in climate adaptation policies.
Drawing on her ongoing EWUCRT-funded research, “Forest-Dependent Communities of the Sundarbans and Their Livelihood Vulnerabilities,” conducted in collaboration with Dr. Rasel Hussain and Helal Uddin of the Department of Sociology, she noted that biodiversity loss is affecting the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities. Findings from the study of 400 households also indicate that seasonal migration is creating additional pressures on women.
Dr. Tanjeela called for people-centred, locally responsive, and decentralized climate adaptation, with greater attention to the social, economic, and governance challenges affecting women and adolescent girls in coastal communities.
