Field Trip Report: Sociology Students Engage with Communities for Hands-On Learning

On April 18, 2024, the Department of Sociology organized an enriching field trip for students enrolled in SOC 406 (Sociology of Development), SOC 401 (Classical Sociological Theories), SOC 313 (Criminology), and SOC 311 (Feminist Thought). This excursion, a pivotal part of their coursework, aimed to facilitate direct engagement with communities and gather invaluable data from the field.

Held at the Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) in Comilla, renowned for its rural development training, the field trip saw students visiting various villages including Boropara, Dhoronibondho, Jammura, and Sribidya. Through interviews and focused group discussions (FGDs), students diligently collected firsthand data tailored to the objectives of their respective courses.

Under the Sociology of Development course, students delved into understanding the developmental dynamics of the selected villages, analyzing both opportunities and challenges faced by the villagers. Meanwhile, students in Criminology focused on identifying prevalent crimes and patterns of criminal behavior within the communities.

Similarly, students enrolled in Feminist Thought explored issues of gender discrimination and the evolving status of women across social, economic, and political spheres within the villages. Additionally, students in the Classical Sociological Theories course investigated superstitions, labor wage disparities, and instances of suicide prevalent in the study villages.

This firsthand experience not only provided students with practical insights but also bridged the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world application. Utilizing the gathered data, students will craft comprehensive assignments, contributing to their academic assessment while fostering a deeper understanding of societal dynamics.
