Faculty Publication | Understanding Male Suicide in Rural Bangladesh | Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan

Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at East West University, has recently published an important article titled “Understanding Male Suicide in Rural Bangladesh: A Narrative Case Analysis Through Hegemonic Masculinity and the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide” in OMEGA – Journal of Death and Dying (SAGE Publications).

This qualitative study explores five male suicide cases from one of Bangladesh’s most suicide-prone rural districts, offering deep insights into how hegemonic masculinity and the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide explain the motivations behind these tragic deaths. The research highlights the impact of factors such as illness, financial debt, familial pressure, landlessness, marital discord, and social isolation.

Dr. Khan’s work underscores the urgent need for multi-dimensional intervention strategies to address the complex interplay of gender, interpersonal relationships, and social structures that contribute to male suicide in rural Bangladesh.
