Helal Uddin, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at East West University, along with his collaborators, has published a research article titled “Effect of Natural Disasters on Youth Mental Health: A Systematic Review” in the Journal of Child & Adolescent Trauma, a Scopus-indexed Q1 journal published by Springer Nature (Impact Factor: 2).

The study synthesizes evidence from 33 peer-reviewed studies to examine how natural disasters affect the mental health of young people aged 15–24 years. The findings reveal that disaster exposure significantly increases the risk of stress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and suicidal ideation among youth. Key risk factors include female gender, low socioeconomic status, direct exposure, displacement, loss of family members, and lack of social support.

The study emphasizes the importance of community- and school-based support systems, psychological first aid, and sustained mental health interventions to reduce long-term psychological harm.
