Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at East West University, has published a new article titled “Mental Illness and Suicide” in The Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of Health, Illness, Behavior, and Society (Second Edition).

The publication highlights suicide as a major global public health concern, claiming over 703,000 lives each year. It emphasizes that mental illnesses—particularly depressive, psychotic, personality, and bipolar disorders—play a central role in most suicide cases. Individuals with mental disorders are at an eightfold higher risk of suicide.

The article further notes that comorbid conditions such as alcohol and substance abuse significantly heighten this risk, with opioid misuse increasing suicide risk by up to 14 times.

The work underscores the urgent need for greater awareness, improved screening, and stronger prevention and intervention strategies to address this global health challenge.
