Faculty Publication | Economic Restructuring and Transportation Platform Workers | Dr. Rasel Hussain
The Department of Sociology, East West University, is pleased to share a recent publication by Dr. Rasel Hussain, Assistant Professor in the department.
Dr. Hussain’s research article, titled “Economic Restructuring and Transportation Platform Workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh: A Question of Employment and Livelihood Vulnerabilities”, has been published in the Journal of Sociology, a Scopus-indexed Q1 journal published by SAGE Publishing.
The paper was first presented at the Future of Work in the Global South and Global North Symposium, organized by the School of Social and Political Sciences, Australia, on 2–3 May 2024. Following the conference, the paper was selected for publication in a special issue titled “Platform Labour in the Global South and Global North” in the Journal of Sociology.
Using survey data from 480 respondents, the study explores how app-based transportation platforms are changing the work environment in Dhaka city. The findings show that while these platforms attract many digitally skilled workers, traditional transport workers with limited digital skills are becoming more vulnerable in terms of employment opportunities and income. The paper also highlights the need for policies and digital skill development initiatives to help traditional transport workers become part of the platform economy and reduce their livelihood vulnerabilities.
