Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan, Associate Professor, and Dr. Rasel Hussain, Assistant Professor, in the Department of Sociology at East West University, have recently published an important article titled “A Content Analysis of Prison/Custodial Suicide in Bangladesh” in the Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences (Walden University, USA).

This pioneering study addresses a critical research gap, as no prior scholarly work had focused on suicide in prison and custodial settings in Bangladesh. Through online newspaper content analysis from 2014 to 2024, the study identified 20 suicide cases and examined them by year, age, sex, type of custody, criminal background, methods, and possible causes. Findings revealed that 65% of suicides occurred in judicial custody, while 35% occurred in police custody. All victims were male, with the majority aged between 20 and 35 years. Hanging emerged as the most common method (90%), and potential contributing factors included fear of punishment, frustration, and mental health issues.

The research emphasizes that suicide in custodial settings is a preventable issue and highlights the urgent need for Bangladesh to develop evidence-based strategies aligned with international guidelines and global best practices.
