Faculty Publication | Climate-Health Risks, Hurricanes and Public Health in Jamaica | Helal Uddin
The Department of Sociology at East West University is pleased to share that Helal Uddin, Senior Lecturer of the department, has co-authored an international review article titled “Protocol for a Climate-Health Risk Profile for Jamaica: Integrating a Systematic Country Profile with a Scoping Review of Hurricane-Related Public Health Impacts,” recently published in Progress in Disaster Science, a Q1 Elsevier journal with an impact factor of 3.8.
This study is the first multi-method research initiative focused on Jamaica to comprehensively examine the links between climate change, hurricanes, and public health risks. By combining a structured country vulnerability assessment with a broad scoping review of academic and grey literature, the research highlights the documented health impacts of hurricanes alongside systemic vulnerabilities and challenges in adaptive capacity.
The publication is particularly relevant for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as it offers evidence-based insights to strengthen disaster preparedness, climate adaptation, and health resilience strategies.
Helal Uddin also supervised the study and guided the research team, who are Master’s students in the Erasmus Mundus Program, contributing to the study’s conceptual and academic development.
This achievement reflects East West University’s growing commitment to global research collaboration and to addressing urgent challenges in climate change, disaster science, and public health.
