Helal Uddin, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at East West University, along with his collaborators, has published a research article titled “Gender and Spatial Variation of Loneliness among Adolescents in Three South Asian Countries: Prevalence and Its Correlates” in BMC Public Health, a Scopus-indexed Q1 journal published by Springer Nature.

The study analyzes data from 7,903 in-school adolescents in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan using the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS). Findings reveal notable gender and regional differences in loneliness, with higher prevalence among female adolescents and the highest levels observed in Afghanistan. The research also identifies strong associations between loneliness and factors such as bullying, school truancy, anxiety-induced sleep disturbances, suicidal ideation, and involvement in physical fights.

The study underscores the need for gender-sensitive and region-specific interventions to address adolescent loneliness and promote supportive school environments across South Asia.

The Department congratulates Mr. Helal Uddin and his research team on this important scholarly contribution.
