Faculty Information on XX ISA World Congress of Sociology 2023, Melbourne, Australia
International Sociological Association (ISA) organizes ISA World Congress of Sociology in every four years. The objective of the congress is to recognize the sociologists from different countries and to highlight and discuss different social phenomena through research and other collaborative activities. This year (2023), it was the 20th congress of ISA (XX ISA World Congress of Sociology) held at Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The next World Congress (XXI ISA World Congress of Sociology) will take place in Gwangju, Korea in 2027.
In the congress, Professor Dr. Fouzia Mannan, Chairperson, Department of Sociology has presented two research papers. One was on “Bound by Patriarchy: Women’s Experience of Internal Migration in Bangladesh”, dated 28 June 2023; and the other one was on “Does Education Really Empower Women? Dr. Mumita Tanjeela, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology has also presented two research papers in the congress. One was on “Gendered Struggle of Bangladeshi Women in Coping with Climate Change: Need for Gender Transformative Approaches”, dated 29 June 2023 and the other one was on “How Students Developed Coping Strategies during COVID-19? a Sociological Study Among University Level Students in Dhaka City, Bangladesh”, dated 30 June 2023. Mr. Masum Billah, Senior Lecturer, Department of Sociology (on study leave) has presented a research paper entitled “Exploring Mental Health Challenges and Coping Strategies in University Students during COVID-19: A Case Study in Dhaka, Bangladesh” in the congress on 29 June 2023. The Co-authors were Shannon Rutherford, Sadika Akhter, and Mumita Tanjeela. Mr. Masum Billah has also moderated a Roundtable Session as a Discussant entitled “In Conversation with Senior Sociologists: Making Connections, Bridging Generations” in the congress on 27 June 2023.
