Editorial Publication | Suicide Prevention in Custodial Settings in Bangladesh
Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan, Associate Professor, and Dr. Rasel Hussain, Assistant Professor from the Department of Sociology, East West University, have published an editorial titled “Suicide in Prisons and Other Custodial Settings in Bangladesh: Key Challenges for Prevention” in the international journal Criminal Behaviour and Mental Health.
The editorial highlights the significantly higher risk of suicide among prisoners compared to the general population and emphasizes that suicide remains a leading cause of death in custodial environments worldwide. It also points out that Bangladesh currently lacks a national suicide prevention strategy and reliable data systems for custodial settings.
The authors call for routine national data collection, targeted research, and the development of evidence-based support services to address suicide risks in prisons. They also emphasize the importance of international collaboration to identify and implement effective prevention practices.
The publication contributes to ongoing global discussions on improving mental health and suicide prevention in prison and custodial environments.
