East West University Faculty Member Publishes Groundbreaking Chapter on Suicidal Behavior in Bangladesh
Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at East West University, has co-authored a pivotal chapter in the recently published book "Suicidal Behavior in Muslim Majority Countries: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, and Prevention." The chapter, written in collaboration with S. M. Yasir Arafat, focuses on Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority country in South Asia experiencing impressive economic growth but facing significant challenges in mental health and suicide prevention.
The chapter delves into the epidemiology, sociodemographic distributions, and risk factors of suicidal behavior in Bangladesh. It also discusses the legal status of suicide, sources of suicide-related data, literacy and stigma factors, and the portrayal of suicide in media. Despite the country's progress, mental health issues remain largely neglected, highlighting the urgency for effective prevention strategies.
