DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY ORGANIZED FIELD TRIP AT DASHERKANDI VILLAGE

The Department of Sociology, East West University, organized a field trip for students enrolled in the courses of SOC 210 (Community, Communication, and Culture) and SOC 303 (Urban Sociology) at the Dasherkandi village on Thursday, September 4, 2025. Dasherkandi, often referred to as Dasherkandi village, is a locale in Dhaka, Bangladesh, known for being the site of South Asia's largest sewage treatment plant. The area is part of Ward 75 of the Dhaka South City Corporation. While often cited as a village in relation to the STP, Dasherkandi has become a significant urban area due to the development of the Dasherkandi Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and its surrounding residential neighborhoods. The sewage plant is a central part of Dhaka WASA's master plan to modernize the city's sewerage system.

The purpose of the field trip is to enhance the students' understanding of the transformation of the village to the urban spaces. The local villagers are being withdrawn from their land due to the integration and domination of the real estate agencies in the localities and the invitation of the outsiders to be part of the newly developed residential and commercial spaces. This gentrification and redesigning of the villages not only transfers the local livelihoods but also the differential usages of lands, culture of the communities, and the neighborhoods. Throughout the field trip, students got to be introduced to different processes of industrialization, anthropological, cultural, economic, historical, political, and social aspects of a village turning towards a newly emerging city. The trip wonderfully bridges the gap between the theoretical learnings and practical orientation.

A total of 80 students participated in the field trip. The field trip was accompanied and guided by the respective course teachers, Dr. Rasel Hussain, Assistant Professor; Ms. Ruma Parvin, Lecturer; and two other respected faculty members—Mr. Helal Uddin, Senior Lecturer, and Manzuma Ahsan, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Sociology, East West University.

The locals were so cordial and supported the visiting students by guiding them and explaining things clearly to the students. The Department of Sociology extends cordial gratitude to the East West University Authority for the kind approval and support for the trip.
