Vision statement

To achieve individual and collective excellence in academic practices and professional competence. 

The general and specific curriculum objectives are as follows:

General:

a) Promote liberal humanitarian values through the study of the masterpieces of English and American literature, non-native writings in English, cultural studies, postcolonial studies etc.

b) Polish, refine and develop sensibilities and cultivate professionalism in manner and behaviour of students to prepare them to be successful future leaders/civil administrators.

c) Strengthen the moral fabric of students and develop their ability to distinguish right from wrong.

d) Promote humanitarian causes in a world dominated by commercial motives.

Specific:

a) Develop excellent communication skills in English, since it is the gateway to success in professional life nowadays nationally and internationally.

b) Prepare good English language and literature teaching professionals to cater to the need of skilled English teachers at the tertiary level in Bangladesh, who will, in turn, help train teachers for secondary and primary levels.

c) Train students as course curriculum designers for English language programs in the country.

d) Train students as English text book/material designers so that they can produce culture and context-sensitive ELT materials.

e) Enable students to design and mark English language tests so that they can evaluate tests of English language and literature and also work as trainers and assessors of standard international English language tests such IELTS and TOEFL.

f) Develop translation skills (for translating our art, literature and culture into English and translating foreign literature, art culture and good textbooks on different subjects from English to Bangla).

g) Impart knowledge and skills required to work with the media, e.g. as news editors in TV and as sub-editors in newspapers.

h) Impart training in creative writing in English so that through their own creative writings they can familiarize foreign nationals with our culture.

Mission statement

In line with the mission of the university, the Department of English offers a BA in English program to prepare undergraduate students to serve in globalized settings. By providing excellent instruction and practical guidance, the program strives to attain internationally acceptable standards in preparing knowledgeable and skilled graduates who are not only equipped with the ability to think critically, but also with advanced reading and writing skills that they can use for a range of professions.

The objectives of BA English program are to prepare graduates with the following qualities:

PEO 1
To prepare graduates to be critical readers, capable of analyzing, evaluating, and formulating opinions on text by applying linguistic and literary theories in their research and teaching.
PEO 2
To provide graduates with requisite reading and writing skills for applying in a variety of professions and for accomplishing academic and professional writing.
PEO 3
To help graduates to become facilitators who will develop and maintain networks with alumni, scholars and professionals worldwide by acquiring effective communication skills developed from various speaking and listening courses.

To equip graduates to serve society by incorporating pedagogical knowledge and literary, linguistics and applied linguistics theories and approaches as sources of wisdom and insight into professional and social life.
