Faculty Publication | Motivation for Civil Service Jobs in Bangladesh | Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan & Dr. Rasel Hussain
The Department of Sociology, East West University, is pleased to share a recent publication by Dr. Anisur Rahman Khan, Associate Professor, and Dr. Rasel Hussain, Assistant Professor, in collaboration with Dr. Mohammad Zohur Islam.
Their research article, titled “Motivation for Civil Service Jobs in Bangladesh: Implications of the Weberian Model of Social Stratification,” has been published in the Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment, a Scopus-indexed Q1 journal published by Taylor & Francis.
Based on a survey of 562 newly recruited Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) officers undergoing training at the Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC), the study examines the motivations behind choosing civil service careers through the lens of Max Weber’s theory of social stratification. The findings reveal that economic security and financial benefits (class), social prestige and professional status (status), and opportunities to exercise authority (power) are key factors influencing young professionals to pursue civil service positions.
The study provides important insights into the career aspirations of educated youth in Bangladesh and highlights the need for broader employment opportunities and policy reforms to address the growing concentration of talent in the civil service sector.
